WHERE KIDS GO TO DREAM
Two decades ago DreamYard was just an idea, one sparked by a group of young people who wrote a play about a place where kids could go to dream. Today, it has developed into the largest arts organization in the Bronx, where it draws on the amazing talents of the young people and families in the neighborhoods surrounding the DreamYard Art Center, and a network of partnering Bronx public schools including the DreamYard Preparatory High School. Based on core values of Artistry, Character, Empowerment and Scholarship, and aligned with the NYC Department of Education Blueprint for the Arts and the NY State Learning Standards, their programs encourage young people to pursue educational pathways toward higher learning, meaningful careers and social action.
PROJECT-BASED ARTS LEARNING
Dreamyard utilizes project-based arts learning to ignite the transformative spirit in youth, public schools, and communities. They do this by collaborating with Bronx youth, families and schools to build pathways to equity and opportunity through the arts. Their innovative programs develop artistic voice, nurture young peoples’ desire to make change and cultivate the skills necessary to reach positive goals, while prepping them to become future leaders and innovators.
IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS
DreamYard works with a network of over 40 Bronx public schools, using the arts to support curriculum and arts learning through DreamYard Residencies and After School Arts Companies that run from October to May each year. DreamYard also hosts the Bronx Arts Learning Community (BALC), a network of public schools working together to reach a goal of arts education for 100% of their students. The only one of its kind in NYC, BALC’s three-tier support system provides a variety of free professional development opportunities for administrators, teachers, and teaching artists.
DREAMYARD PREP HIGH SCHOOL
DreamYard Prep High School (DY Prep) is the only multi-arts integration school in NYC, and promotes Scholarship, Character and Artistry in its over 370 students. The arts-integrated curriculum emphasizes problem solving and critical thinking in addition to enriched understanding of all subject areas. DY Prep is committed to providing the support and guidance that will allow each student to graduate with a Regents diploma, gain acceptance to a college or university, and set them on a clear path toward a fulfilling and meaningful career.
DREAMYARD ART CENTER
The DreamYard Art Center offers nationally-recognized programming across various art forms that include theatre, poetry, dance, visual arts, photography, video, music + audio production, fashion design, and Maker projects. At the Art Center, 5 to 21 year olds access the arts, leadership development opportunities, and academic and social supports such as college preparation, social work services, and artist mentorship. Programs run after school and on weekends from October to May, with summer intensives in July.
