Harbor House: shelter from abuse

eliminating domestic violence through shelter, empowerment, education + justice

In operation for 37 years, Harbor House of Central Florida is one of the most comprehensive Domestic Violence centers in the United States, and a national leader in utilizing a holistic, replicable approach for domestic abuse intervention, awareness and prevention. Harbor House provides safe shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, children’s services, counseling, emotional support, and legal advocacy for thousands of domestic violence survivors and their children each year.

They have five main programs to support their mission: emergency shelters, children’s services, community outreach, legal advocacy services and community & professional education.

Their core service is the 102-bed Emergency Shelter that operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year, for women, men and child survivors of domestic abuse. It is one of the 10 largest shelters in the U.S. and includes critical childcare services and an onsite Kennel. In the future Harbor House has plans to replace two of their facilities that are facing increasing deterioration. Harbor House continues their mission to eliminate domestic abuse in Central Florida by providing safety, shelter, empowerment, education and justice.

They have recently opened The Paws for Peace Kennel, a 1,500 square foot Kennel located onsite at their confidential Emergency Shelter. It was established so that those facing abuse could leave their abusers knowing that they would not be leaving their pet with someone who would harm, torture or kill them. It is a state-of-the-art facility that serves as a national model for on-site kenneling at domestic violence shelters.
