Homeboy Tote Bags, Artecnica’s most provocative Design with Conscience™ project to date, is a collaboration with the award-winning graphic design firm Studio Lin and Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention program in the U.S.
The canvas totes bear original calligraphy created by ex-gang members in Los Angeles with resources provided by Homeboy Industries. Totes feature quotes like “We’re a whole lot more than the worst we’ve ever done," beautifully drawn by past gang members and individually screenprinted by their collective in L.A.
Homeboy Industries assists ex-gang members in building their own sustainable local businesses--offering ex-gang members and at-risk youth (approximately 12,000 of them every year) an opportunity for a second chance.
“I work with guys that I shot at before...Now we’re friends.” --From Father G and the Homeboys.
'Father G and the Homeboys' is the documentary narrated by Martin Sheen that brings to life how Greg Boyle and Homeboy Industries help to re-direct thousands of gang addicted teens towards better lives.
Design w/ Conscience, founded by Artecnica in 2002, is a program for the design and manufacturing of products to be in accordance with humanitarian and environmentally sensitive principles. Their aim is to use design as a catalyst for change and to provide opportunities to help transform the global landscape.
