Over a billion people globally live on dirt floors. EarthEnable is changing that. Dirt floors are a major cause of infectious disease, respiratory illness, malnutrition, and vector-born disease. The most common alternative, concrete, is prohibitively expensive and environmentally unsustainable. EarthEnable is a social enterprise that provides an affordable alternative to dirt floors: locally sourced, earthen floors that are 75% cheaper than a concrete floor. The floors are water-proof, easy to clean, and abrasion resistant. EarthEnable is based in Rwanda, and has an almost entirely Rwandese staff. Through their model they also train and hire local masons and sales people, boosting local employment and human capital. Design is at the core, and they are in the process of designing and testing new house construction products for health and well-being. The guiding star for EarthEnable is eliminating dirt floors globally, and we are expanding rapidly to reach that target.
